COURSE OVERVIEW

To succeed at university, you need to be able to read and think about a wide range of study material, make useful notes, and write assignments that answer the question. This programme will help you to develop the skills and language to do this. You’ll explore how university study materials are organised and how academic language is used in them.

Course Description

Our Academic English course is designed to develop language and study skills within a British academic context and aims to prepare students for university life. This programme can be combined with an IELTS preparation course for those students looking to improve their IELTS score.

Lesson content aims to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in practical contexts such as understanding lectures, giving presentations and writing assignments. It also includes a focus on study skills and critical thinking.

In addition you will gain in confidence and linguistic competence, which will benefit your ability to communicate in English in general. Throughout the learning process, we measure your progress clearly to highlight strengths, needs and objectives, to ensure that you achieve your goal as quickly and as effectively as possible.

    • Searching for evidence: primary and secondary resources
    • Documentation and formatting

In order to get as much as possible out of your learning experience, we recommend you attend at least 85% of classes, complete all homework given and do self-study as directed by your teacher. You will also be given regular homework and weekly tests to check your progress.  

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you can expect to have developed your understanding and practice of:

  • using language for a range of academic purposes, including description, comparison, explanation, evaluation, persuasion, problem solving, cause and effect, and argument
  • selecting information and ideas from different sources and using this to support an academic argument
  • reflecting on and critiquing academic texts
  • communicating more effectively in a global and academic environment
  • developing understanding of the conventions of good academic practice
